RaeMag’s Limari Colón on Univision TV

Congratulations to Limari for her beautiful performance on Univision TV. If you missed it, you can check it out here. RaeMag sat down to talk with Limari about her experience and what it was like performing her own song on live TV.

RaeMag: For our non-Spanish speaking readers and those who aren’t familiar with Locas de Atar and Univision, what’s the show about?

Limari: Univision is a huge Latin American Channel. Locas de Atar is a new Puerto Rican TV show, that airs live, and covers an array of things like the music scenes. There are local comedic talents like Suzette Bacó, and Sonya, they even cook on the show. Then, there is the segment I participated on, where they give people a chance to “Sell your dream”. Something similar to “America’s got talent”…

RaeMag: So how did you land the TV spot?

Limari: My aunt sent me a message via Facebook of the casting. I submitted my photo, and a link to a rock band I played in for 5 years. I got a call for an audition, went, and got it!

RaeMag: Was the song you performed an original composition?

Limari: Yes. It was the song that made me land a husband!

RaeMag: Ah, nice work ;) What’s the song about?

Limari: Hahaha thanks. The song talks about how a stranger filled me with curiosity, and how I wish that what I once stop desiring and imagining, existed. Basically, it’s about love.

RaeMag: That’s beautiful. Give us some insight into your songwriting process. Do you start with a chord progression? The melody line? The lyrics?

Limari: My songwriting process is very spontaneous. Sometimes I start with a chord progression, other times with the melody… For this song, I remember writing my feelings on a piece of paper, and immediately searching for the right music to express them.

RaeMag: Was this your first time performing on live television?

Limari: Live, and on my own, yes.

RaeMag: How did you prepare for this particular performance?

Limari: I practiced every day, in front of a mirror, in front of my family, my husband and my cats. I asked for feedback, saw other performers from previous recordings of the show, and visualized a lot!

RaeMag: What was going through your head right before you went on stage? Were you nervous?

Limari: Oh my God. I was! It was one of the most nerve wrecking experiences of my life. My hands were sweating and it was really cold, I thought I was going to vomit. But, I closed my eyes, and I imagined I was a tree. Hahaha. My mom suggested that. I don’t know why, but it worked! I reminded myself that I was well prepared, and if I messed up, it wasn’t the end of the world.

RaeMag: A tree, that’s great! Maybe it helped you feel ‘rooted’ or grounded…

Limari: Hahahahaha. Yes!

RaeMag: How did performing in front of the camera compare to being live on stage?

Limari: It’s different. When I performed live on stage, the adrenaline, and the crowd kept me on my feet, excited. On the other hand, performing in front of a camera made self-motivation come in handy. I had to bear in mind the fact that even though I was in a room with 50 people, thousands of spectators watched me from home.

RaeMag: Yeah, I guess the energy is very different in that sense.

Limari: Completely.

RaeMag: We’re you happy with your performance and the judges’ critiques?

Limari: Very! I felt satisfied and joyful that my perseverance paid off. I also felt thankful for all the feedback I received on and off air.

RaeMag: The next few questions are for the techies :)

Limari: OK.

RaeMag: What kind of guitar do you play?

Limari: I play both acoustic and electric guitars. What I used for the show was an Esteve 4S1. My other baby is an American Telecaster from the amazing Leo Fender.

RaeMag: Nice choices. Do you have a favorite guitar?

Limari: Yes. Tele, Tele, and Tele. After long years of searching, I found my sound in it.

RaeMag: What kind of picks do you prefer?

Limari: I like hard, medium-sized pics (1-1.5mm). No soft ones. No super tiny ones. And definitely, not the huge ones.

RaeMag: If given the option, would you do the whole TV thing again?

Limari: Hands down. A million times if I had the opportunity!

Thanks to Limari for taking the time to talk with us and for sharing her amazing talent with the RaeMag community and the world!
